The New ASSE 6000 Requirements For EOSC Testing

Hospitals and other medical facilities that depend on an oxygen supply for patient care also are required to have an emergency oxygen supply connection (EOSC). These are auxiliary connections used in the event of emergencies or during maintenance to the building’s main oxygen supply. They typically are required to be installed on the exterior of the property to allow for easy connection to emergency supply vehicles at all times and in all types of weather conditions.

An EOSC also must comply with ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000 standards, which are nationally recognized throughout the medical gas industry. Recently, the ASSE 6000 standards were revised to include testing standards that facilities must follow.

What Changed in the ASSE 6000 Standards?

Prior to 2021, there were no specified requirements for EOSC testing. However, this changed with revisions to Annex D as well as references in the NFPA 99 2024 code, also known as the Heath Care Facilities Code. These revised guidelines required “periodic testing” of facilities’ emergency oxygen supply connections. The change was designed in part to enhance safety and operational efficiency.

Determining what “periodic” means is left up to the facility or, if applicable, local regulations. Administrators must define their own schedules for testing and implement it into their risk management and maintenance plans. For testing to be effective, facilities must adhere to the schedules they create as a matter of policy.
